One of the attractions on Catalina Island is the bountiful waters surrounding the island providing the perfect place for fishing. Private charters such as Bight Sportfishing operate out of Newport Beach and San Diego use Catalina as a stopping point. This allows fishing expeditions to also visit Avalon and explore everything Catalina has to offer! Many different sportfishing boats will take you throughout Southern California’s targeting species around Catalina Island. Some of the most popular fish caught across the coast of Catalina is Calico Bass, White Seabass, Yellowtail Amberjack, and many more!

The waters around Catalina have been lucky enough to have the presence of “The beast” aka The Mighty Pacific Blue Fin Tuna for the past 6 years! These fish in our local waters have ranged from 20 lbs to up to 400 lbs and can reach 80 plus inches in length. In the pursuit of these fish, fisherman have taken up old past traditions and modernized them to be able to display different types of blue fin’s favorite meals, such as flying fish and sardines. This has triggered these fish to show their brutal power in attacking these baits. And the best part- eating blue fin tuna! Think about the delicious poke you can make, or if you are talented, make some sushi! Do not wait too long – no one knows how long they will be here.

Catalina is known as the best year-round fishery in the Southern California region. One of the best ways to get out on that beautiful blue pacific sea is through Catalina fishing charters, which offer the opportunity to explore on and off the island. Another idea is to take a kayak or small boat from the pier and explore the coves around the island. With the endless options around Catalina, you will enjoy yourself and hopefully leave with a belly full of scrumptious fish.

If fishing is not your scene, then next best thing is grabbing a delicious cocktail at one of the many famous restaurants serving freshly caught fish. Catalina restaurants offers beautiful views of the ocean and an assortment of local fish. Two of our favorites include Blue Water Grill and NDMK. Blue Water provides a full bar, stunning views, famous clam chowder, and a selection of grilled fish. If you are looking for fish tacos, grab a seat at NDMK – a fisherman’s restaurant just off Crescent Ave. What is the best part? The Hermosa Hotel is only a walk away!
