THINGS TO DO IN WINTER AT HERMOSA

First of all, let’s use the word “winter” carefully… our friends on the island have a pretty “harsh” winter with the average weather still in the 60’s and sunny days with a few welcomed sprinkles here and there.  Dinning on the beach in “winter” is common even if now you have to wear pants (in the shade)! At Hermosa we prepare for winter by bringing out extra fluffy blankets and even offer electric blankets for those that like to stay super toasty with windows open at night to take in the ocean breeze while staying cozy!

Scuba dive and see the beautiful creatures

The fish are active and sea lions out to play! If you need to get certified or don’t want to drag all the gear our friends at PCH are here to help. They have been coming to the island for years and can help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable dive!

Book a day fishing charter

This is another way to enjoy the fish – but get to take one home with you too! The fishing around the island is exciting and always game for an adventure. Partner up with a professional (all listed on Chamber website above) to book your experience in advance.

Hike the Trans-Catalina trail

Summers can be hot but winter in Avalon is perfect hiking weather. Enjoy all the acres of open land without the heat!

Bring your gold clubs and go golfing

Enjoy one of the oldest golf courses in California. Don’t get distracted while you take in the views of the ocean and play through the hills tucked into the natural surroundings. Simply gorgeous and also a do-able course (9 holes) to play just once before lunch or twice if you’re not on a schedule. For tee times call 310.510.0530.

Rent an electric bike

Located just off the dock hop onto an electric bike and easily ride up the hills of Avalon taking in the charming views of the city. No reservations needed, just arrive ready to ride!

Take your holiday pictures at the Wrigley Memorial

Walk or ride up the hill to the stunning Botanical garden and Wrigley memorial. Take in the views all the way to Long Beach and snap a few photos for Instagram or your holiday cards. Wander through the trails of succulents you have to see to believe! Easy walk for all ages and abilities!

Rent a golf cart and explore the island.

There are two locations where you can rent a gold cart for 2 hours and explore the island. Follow the map provided to see all the best look out spots and historical landmarks.

Eat! There are still plenty of places to get a warm cup of clam chowder

Not everyone would expect but Catalina is a fun place to indulge your culinary taste buds. From savory tacos at Café Mimi’s to fresh locally caught sushi at NDMK and clam chowder on the patio at Blue Water you are bound to find something for everyone. Pizza at Antonio’s is a must as well as a hamburger at Coney Islands with hot French fries… yum! Save room for ice cream at Scoops or Llyods and some saltwater taffy as well!
