The Hermosa Hotel is excited about the island reopening for Spring 2021. We have been anxiously awaiting the return of visitors to our island and hotel for what seems like a year now with a few friends coming and going we hope that this time it is for real! However, we know that the “new normal” will impact travelers, when they can visit, and how they experience the island.

For starters – welcome back! Are you wondering what is open? Luckily for us the Chamber, Love Catalina, has been keeping track daily and has you covered. Check out the link here and if you are with us on the island we have this QR Code at the front desk.

Still not so sure about traveling? What will your trip look like?

  1. Zip line – its outside in the trees! You won’t be in a crazy crowded as you fly through the air!
  2. The Catalina Island Museum – when it opens – check out their exhibits and the very touchless experience you can learn all about Catalina History! This beautiful setting will inspire and teach you at the same time.
  3. Hike to Wrigley Memorial – explore the botanical garden full of things you have never seen before then climb up the stairs to the views of Long Beach! The fun blue tiles also make for some great Instagram moments! Trails around Catalina are also open so you have oodles of ways to explore.
  4. Rent Electric Bikes to explore Avalon – open on weekends only right now this is still the best way to explore the historic charm all over Avalon.
  5. Ice Cream at Lloyds! This is an island tradition you cannot miss. Let the ice cream drip down your chin on the beach and find your favorite fudge and taffy flavors to take home.
  6. Parasail above it all … swing your feet as you sail above the water overlooking the island.
  7. Sip a Wicky Wacker on the beach at Luau Larry’s… we can’t explain, you just have to try it!
  8. Shops – well because you need a “Catalina Wine Mixer” T-shirt!

Ways that the island is coping with covid and travel:

  1. Masks… we are all used to this by now. The boat has stopped the bar service to help everyone observe wearing masks throughout the trip. It’s only an hour and everyone is really good about keeping them on.
  2. Outside Dinning … one good thing to happen from covid is on-the-beach dinning! Most restaurants that are open are seating guests on the beach for dinner. Bring a jacket just in case – the beach cools down quickly in the evenings. While different, it is still the Catalina magic you’re expecting.
  3. Snacks and In-Room-Cooking… pick a room at The Hermosa with a kitchenette. This will help you cut down on the eating out and masking up situations. You can shop at Vons across the street and prepare breakfast and lunch in your room!
