Catalina Outdoor Adventures
Leave Town and Get into the Island’s Interior… with Scotty!
Written by: MARK
Many of you reading this remember Scotty, who was a Hermosa Hotel front desk manager for four years. Well, after almost a year of applying and waiting, Scotty obtained the permits and has launched “Catalina Outdoor Adventures.” It is exciting to tell you about my trip into the “interior” with him! With Catalina Outdoor Adventures, Scotty takes you to the back (or west) side of the island.
When you arrive, you’ll find a stable of fine mountain bikes, surf boards, boogie boards and acres of beach! Avalon is on the leeward side of the island and doesn’t really get any surf-able waves. The back side has fun Pacific Ocean waves to play in. Whatever you decide to do when you get there, Scotty will lead you through the activity so that you have a knowledgeable expert on hand for educational and safety purposes.
Travel is in a late model Explorer that offers a smooth ride over the unpaved roads. We stopped and ate lunch at the “Airport in the Sky” café. After being with the weekend crowds, it was a relief to enjoy this nearly private patio area. Every once in awhile a plane landed or took off. Pilots would saunter in for a soda or coffee, maybe a buffalo burger, and then they’d take off!
We saw a few buffalo (American bison) and a Catalina Island Fox. There were plenty of hawks and we think a bald eagle in the tree top on a branch. Overall, I would choose to go “out back” again. Scotty’s always a sure thing for a great Catalina Outdoor Adventure!
